In addition to having hand sanitizer, consider also carrying around sanitizing wipes to use on things such as grocery carts or public telephones.
The next step in keeping yourself healthy is to avoid sick people. Of course some people who appear healthy aren’t, but by avoiding sick people you’ll be distancing yourself from thousands of germs. Although this may seem like common sense, many people are so concerned with politeness that they will converse with someone sniffling and coughing. Don’t worry about offending anyone—your health is more important.
The third thing you can do to reduce the chances of getting the swine flu is to maintain (or start) a healthy lifestyle. In order to fight off the virus, your body needs nutritious food and plenty of rest. Try to get seven or eight hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables and eat lean proteins. And don’t skip breakfast—a bowl of oatmeal with a glass of orange juice will give you the fuel you need to fight off diseases along with a healthy dose of vitamin C.
While these steps will reduce your likelihood of contracting swine flu, nothing can guarantee your immunity. That’s why it’s important to recognize the symptoms and seek medical attention early on. The symptoms of swine flu are similar to a regular flu. You’ll feel lethargic and may have a fever and an achy body. Cough, sore throat, runny nose, diarrhea, and vomiting are also symptoms, though they may not all be present. Finally, don’t panic. There is treatment available, so make an appointment with your doctor right away if you become ill.
